Bulgaria will be among the first countries in Europe to premiere “a land shaped by women”, the latest film project by Anne-Flore Marxer and Aline Bock. The film, already highly acclaimed at a number of festivals, presents in a memorable way the journey of two ladies - freeride champions in Iceland. The two cross the country by van, exploring its beautiful northern countryside through the adventure sports they are crazy about - surfing and snowboarding. Along the way, they meet inspiring Icelandic women and explore their way of thinking, in a country with a rich tradition and a special status of gender equality.
Professional snowboarders , who have had to fight for equality in a male-dominated sport throughout their careers, want to dig deep into the views and attitudes of Icelandic women by combining their research with their love of mountains and waves.
The film puts gender equality at the centre of the narrative, the narrative has a distinctly female feel. Along the way, the two protagonists meet a lady human rights lawyer who helps to change Iceland's constitution for more equality. They also tell us about the first Icelandic woman to climb Mount Everest, also Iceland's first female surfer who founded her own outdoor brand, and a poet whose poems, dealing with the subject of the treatment of today's women, move them deeply.
“During our journey we came across indisputable evidence of some of the most serious cases related to the topic of women in contemporary society,” say Anne-Floret and Aline Bock.
Iceland, apart from being a country with some of the most captivating landscapes in the entire world, great splitboard terrain, unforgettable surfing sessions and hikes under the most gorgeous northern lights, is also a country that has played a major role in the modern history of gender equality. Iceland was the first country to elect a woman president on the basis of equal voting rights and has topped the United Nations Gender Equality Index for 9 years.
